Some of us have brothers, other have sisters. Some of us are blessed to have both. For me, if you would have asked me when I was young, I would have said that I had an annoying older sister, and it would have ended there. Chances are she thought of me as the annoying little sister! But why?

My sister and I almost have 4 years difference. Everything she did growing up, I wanted to do! Are you surprise? I’m pretty sure you aren’t! I also know that it annoyed her… because she did let me know! It’s all part of growing up.
As we grew up, during our teenage years, I don’t have recollection that we spent that much time together, other then when we had family functions. Otherwise, she had her friends, I had mine. We didn’t search for that sibling bond… well, that is what I think! Until she left for college…
First thing I wanted when she left was her room… OH YEAH, my big sister is out of the house, I get to move into her room! The excitement was quickly replaced by loneliness. What could cause this feeling? You guessed it, I missed my big sister.

The sister bond has always been there, but I think it took it’s full meaning when I became pregnant with my first child. She was there for me to cheer me on, to remind me that even though I was only 20, I was one of the best mother she has ever known (after ours of course). She was my safety net when I screwed up, when I needed support… she was the BIG sister I needed!
She went through some life events that I couldn’t imagine having to go through. She had been there for me in so many ways when I needed support or when I needed a shoulder to lean on. If only I could give back everything she gave me!

This week was her birthday. In my weird way, I sang her happy birthday on Facebook with some emoticons! When you are far apart, you sometime need to find special ways to bond. It’s difficult not being able to be there to celebrate her life, but what I want her to know is that: YOU are an inspiration, smart, beautiful, gifted, valued, a fighter, full of life and loved… you are MY BIG SISTER!
