Prep Day #9 – Brunch

Sunday… fist day of a new week!  What is the best way to start off a new week? A huge breakfast!  It is always nice to go out as a family and have Brunch. Now a days, going out to eat if very costly… even for Brunch!  Next best thing is to make it at home.

I agree, going out for Brunch provides you with a variety that you will not necessarily have if you are eating at home.  Then again, you can have the basics! What are the basics?

  • Eggs
  • Sausages
  • Bacon –this is a MUST!
  • Potatoes
  • Toasts
  • Fruits –a variety of fruits!

I can hear you now… bacon?  It is so messy to cook!  I thought so too until I started doing it on a foil lined cookie sheet… goodbye stove-top covered greased and hello easy cleaning!  It is the best way to cook bacon… and you can cook more than a few strips at once. I often cook bacon over the weekend so the guys have some available for a quick breakfast.  A fried egg, bacon between toast and you have a quick breakfast sandwich that will keep you going like the Energizer bunny!

Juggling everything cooking to serve breakfast to everyone at once so you can eat a family meal is not easy.  Think again!

First off, insure you know how everyone will take their eggs.  This will help you plan which plate you will do first.  If you have any scrambled eggs request, maximize the use of your microwave. They can be used for more that just warming up, melting or popping pop-corn!  While these are cooking away in the microwave, you can do some turn over eggs in your pan.

Now that you know how everyone wants their eggs, start off by cooking all of your meat.  With your bacon baking away in the oven, you can slow cook your sausages on the stove top.

For your bacon, make sure that you get the extra grease off by patting them off with paper towel.  Place your bacon and sausages in individual small Pyrex bowl and cover with foil.  Make sure one of your over racks are at the very top of the oven.  Place your foil covered bowl on that rack.  On the other lower rack, place your potatoes (in my case, it was store bought hash-brown).  While these are baking, prepare your table, fruits and get ready for toasting mania.

One of the important things in your breakfast/brunch is the toasts preparation. No one love toasts with butter that didn’t have a chance to melt.  Once you have your individual fruit bowls plated on each plate, and you have your eggs going (scrambled and turn-over), get some toasts going in the toaster. Now, I don’t have a multi slice toaster… it only makes 2 at a time. In this case, I made sure I was ready with my buttering station.  Toast would come up, knife and butter were ready!  However, this is where it get’s tricky… you need to be able to juggles having your toasts pop up and turn your eggs at the same time.

I agree, this morning, I only had 3 breakfast to prepare… not like having a table of 10.  However, it is as easy to mess-up breakfast preparation.  Between you and I, this is the meal I HATE to prepare the most.  This is why I am not making Brunch often!

Even if the stress of making this meal gets to me every time, I think that I managed to make something that is worth staying in… the bright side, we get to eat in our pajamas!
