What? You have a Boyfriend!

Congratulations, it’s a girl!  From the minute you hear these word, you already worry about the guys that will come knocking on your door.  I’m no different than anyone else… it’s the first thing I thought.  Easy plan, she won’t be allowed to date until she is an adult –technically at 18– but if I had my way, she would have waited until she was 30.

It’s crazy, but think about it; your daughter is getting ready for her very first real date and she is so nervous.  You are also… but not for the same reasons. She hopes that he will like the clothes she picked out, that her hair is perfect and that her makeup is well done.  You just hope that the guy will treat her well and that he is not a complete douche.  You smile at her and provide words of wisdom to comfort her nerves but in reality, you are in major need of comforting… or a glass of wine!

Been there, done that!  I have gone through the first date experience with my daughter. It was exactly as I described above. Even if I wanted to protect her from getting hurt, it was an experience that I knew that she had to live at one point in her life.  First love is wonderful… first broken heart is hard!

Even though I experienced the ”first date” experience with my daughter, it doesn’t change the fact that having her tell me that she has a date or she is bringing a guy home, I get worried. I can just imagine how my parents felt when I was that age!  I can only imagine what my son will go through when he goes on his first date…

Why do I get worried? Because I’m a parent! I don’t know the guy.  Don’t know where he is from, the background, education… and I could go on and on. If it was up to me, the guy would have a questionnaire to answer before even taking her out on a date.

We have to trust that we provided her with the tools she needs to determine if it is a good or bad relationship.  She also needs to believe in herself and know what she is worth.  I know I do… but a part of me will always worry!

In the end, she will always be my little girl… even when she will be 30!
