Who says that burgers can only be made with meat? Some people like them better with meat… on my end, I don’t mind a vegetarian style burger once in a while. As long that it is not made with a bunch of ingredients I can’t name! It has to be fresh and tasty; so I created my own using red lentil.
As mentioned in a previous post, my son’s girlfriend is vegetarian. Therefore, I get to test and try a whole bunch of different vegetarian recipe. In the beginning, I used to make sure I always had something on hand. As time went on, we noticed that these pre-made vegetarian meals (especially the meat replacement) were not that great. This is why I started testing my own ideas… and I depend on Camille (my son’s girlfriend) to tell me if it was good or not!
To make this burger, you will need:
- 1/2 cup of red lentil
- 1/2 cup of bread crumbs
- 1 green onion
- 1/2 of a bell pepper (your choice of color)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp of garlic powder
- 1 tsp of dry parsley
- 1 tsp of paprika
- 1/2 tsp of oregano
- 1 Tbsp of Dijon Mustard
Cook your red lentils until they are tender. Drain and set them aside. While your lentils are cooking, chop your pepper & onion.
Using a food processor, put all ingredients in… and process!
Blend until you get a sticky consistency.
Shape your patties! These measurements give you a total of 3 big patties or 4 mid-size.
Using a cast iron pan or a non-stick skillet, melt some butter and brown your patties.
You want to cook your patties around 5 minutes per site on medium heat. Once cooked, top off with any topping you may like. I added some shredded mozzarella to mine…
Just like any burger, you may add all toppings you wish after–ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions… let your hunger guide you!
Who said a vegetarian burger had to be boring!!
